In 2009 I travelled to The Gambia with my wife and then 2 year old son. We traveled up The Gambia river to visit James Island which is now known as Kunta Kinte Island after the character Kunta Kinte the Gambian legend who was captured and sold into slavery and popularised by the book Roots. The Island sits at the mouth of the River Gambia, and played a key role in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
